Okay, so i konw the Knicks aren't like they used to be. I get that. But good lord! Kobe and LeBron's effective and brutal tag teaming of the New York Knicks were stuff of legend. As a New Yorker, I feel like I can't be mad at the fans for cheering these two transcendant stars. On Monday, Kobe did what Kobe does, get buckets. A lot of them. And made it look really frigin easy! LeBron did what LeBron does, dominate. Everything. He was the best scorer, passer, defender, rebounder, etc. on the floor. Kobe's performance was masterful, but he didn't command the fanfare like LeBron always has. Kobe's overall consensus among basketball minds as the best player alive (?) is still relatively young. Kobe has almost made you forget all about his misssteps in his relatively young career. However, LeBron has been groomed for this. He was the most celebrated athlete to enter a sport, EVER.
The beautiful thing about this, is that LeBron will save the Knicks...even if he doesn't sign in 2010. (Hear me out on this one)
LeBron gets louder ovations than any Knick player can ever dream of, as an opponent. If LeBron does leave home in 2010 and sign with the New York Knicks, Halleljuah.
But... If he doesn't want to dumb down for his audience to double his dollars (Hov!), he will get booed relentlessly everytime he touches the Garden floor.
Enter our new rival...
This ages Reggie Miller, a brand new villain who is every bit up to the challenge to take the heart out of the Garden faithful. The beautiful thing about the Knicks in the 90s is that they had true rivals! Games that they knew weren't just games, games that they had to get up for.
By that time, the Knicks will have the cap space, already have the playing style, and city to attract SOME big names to the Garden in the event that LBJ doesn't sign.
Chris Bosh already said he's gone, Dirk will be a free agent, Amare and Nash are already shopping for cribs in Brooklyn (just kidding but you get the idea), and Dwyane Wade isn't s terrible consolation prize, right?
Going with my gut feeling that never anything goes right, just enjoy these last two days of beautiful basketball by two amazing athletes...
